Mozambique’s Zavala district is one of the poorest in a country where 70 percent of the population lives in poverty. A typical primary school is makeshift at best — an inadequate shelter against the elements and lacking access to clean water and sanitation. To get there, children must walk for as long as five hours along unsafe roads.
No wonder that in Mozambique, only about half of the children finish primary school. This widespread lack of education is a primary reason for Mozambique’s poverty.
ChildFund is working to change that, by bringing education within children’s reach inside better, brighter, more accessible schools.
