ChildFund responds in Ukraine: Keeping kids healthy, learning and safe despite war

Richmond, Virginia | February 28, 2022  As children and families across Ukraine hide from or flee the Russian invasion, ChildFund and its partners in ChildFund Alliance are moving quickly to provide the food, medicine and other basics they need. Teachers are working with children online, and our partners in country are delivering school supplies and play materials as restrictions allow. In the country’s southwest, we are also supporting a program to address children’s psychosocial needs, which are spiraling as caregivers struggle to calm their children’s fears while trying to manage their own.

ChildFund has worked in Ukraine for nearly 20 years, supporting children in group homes, a children’s cancer center, families who have been displaced due to the country’s ongoing conflict, and other extremely vulnerable people.

All these efforts face challenges as mobility becomes increasingly constrained, supply chains disrupted and fuel scarce, but ChildFund will adjust its response to adapt as this dynamic situation unfolds. Meanwhile, we also have our eye on the refugee situation in Ukraine’s neighboring countries, including Romania and Poland, where ChildFund Alliance also has presence and is preparing to respond.
