Pamudi lives with her bother and parents in a rented house situated in a village in the Moneragala district of Sri Lanka. The house itself is only partially constructed. The walls of the house are constructed with brick, the floor with cement and the roof is strewn with asbestos sheets. Pamudi’s family has to go to a neighbor’s well to draw water for the family’s needs as they do not have a well or pipe-borne water supply on their rented property. Pamudi’s father is the sole breadwinner of the family. He is a laborer. He works long and hard to generate much needed income for the family. His annual income is about USD545. Pamudi’s family of four must subsist on this low income. Pamudi’s mother is a housewife. She takes care of Pamudi and her brother and attends to the household chores. The parents struggle to nourish their precious children with their low income. Soon they would have to prepare for making arrangements for education as well and this would only add to the already heavy burden. However, if a generous person were to step forward to intervene, it could make a world of difference for little Pamudi and her family.
