Farming is the way they make the living and the farmland they work on is a small plot. Due to the soil infertility, the crops are not of good quality. If it rained well, they might get abundant crops and sufficient for whole year consumption but if it was drought, the crops might be damaged and this would throw his family into an extreme hardship, they had to buy rice for home consumption instead. It is not easy to make ends meet and survive with uncertain circumstances and inconsistent income; this may not allow his family to ensure the boy a decent education and proper feeding which may risk his growth.
