Pedro is a young Brazilian boy who lives with his mother, Vitoria; grandmother, Alanice, and with a younger brother and one uncle, in a rural community located in the Jequitinhonha Valley, northeastern Minas Gerais, which is a poor and drought-stricken region. Their simple home, which is lent to them, has brick walls, rough cement flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. The father has never provided any financial assistance whatsoever and his whereabouts is unknown. Alanice works as a day laborer in agriculture and the family receives a small family allowance from the federal government. Pedro is tranquil, shy and curious. He likes playing with toy cars in the company of other kids his age. He has a dog he is fond of. Pedro is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. He attends a local public preschool where he is making good progress. The family is needy and through your support Pedro and his family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
