Jecson is a young boy who lives with his parents in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique in southern Africa. The region is characterized by a hot and humid climate for most of the year. Their house, which is self-built, has bare concrete block walls and a rusty zinc sheet roof, in a damp slum prone to erosion during the rainy season. It has running water and electricity, but the toilet facilities leave a little to be desired. The father has no formal job; he is just a handyman, whose income is uncertain and insignificant, insufficient to meet the familys most pressing needs. In short, his living circumstances are of abject poverty, in which he lacks almost everything. However, Jecson is in elementary school and his childhood aspiration is to become a policeman in the future. In his spare time, Jecson likes to play soccer and marbles for fun. The family has sought assistance from the program, where Jecson will certainly receive support in the areas of health, education, nutrition, and recreation.
