Riana is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her mother, Antonia, and with two brothers, in a rural community located in the state of Ceara. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, rough cement flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Electricity is available. Water is carried from an artesian well. The father has abandoned the home and has not been providing any type of financial support for his children. Antonia works as a day laborer in agriculture and the family receives a small family allowance from the federal government. Riana is intelligent, cheerful and polite. She helps her mom by washing the dishes. She loves playing house and with dolls. She has a dog she is fond of. Riana is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. She attends a local public primary school and her favorite subject is Portuguese. Her big dream is to become a doctor someday. The family is needy and through your support Riana and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
