Marilia is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her parents, Rodrigo and Gilmara, and with two brothers, in a small rural village located in the interior of the state of Ceara, which is a hot and remote region. Their simple home has brick walls, rough cement floors and a clay-tiled roof. It is rented and has a tiny bathroom. Rodrigo tries to earn a living as a day laborer in agriculture, but his very low income is far from enough to meet basic needs. Marilia is intelligent and cheerful. Her pet name is Tete. She runs small errands for her mom. She likes playing tag and hide-and-seek. She has a cat she is fond of. Marilia is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. She attends a local public school and her favorite subject is History. She says she will become a police officer when she grows up.
