Walquiria is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her parents, Francisco and Antonia, and with two brothers and a sister, in a rural community in the interior of the state of Ceara. Their simple home has brick walls, rough cement floors and a clay-tiled roof. It is self-built and has a tiny bathroom. Francisco works as a day laborer in agriculture when available and the family receives a small family allowance from the federal government. Walquiria is intelligent and friendly. She helps around the house mostly by washing the dishes and sweeping the floor. Her favorite pastimes include playing school and tag. She has a dog she is passionately fond of. Walquiria is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. She attends a local public school where she is making good progress. Her wish is to be a schoolteacher when she grows up. Through your support Walquiria and her family will have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, education and nutrition.
