Joao is a young Brazilian boy who lives with his mother, Jakelane, and with a sister, in a slum area on the outskirts of a city located in the state of Ceara. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, rough cement flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. The father has abandoned the home and has not been providing any type of financial support for his children. Jakelane works as a general helper for a local firm and her earnings are far from enough to meet even the most basic needs of her family. Joao is communicative, affectionate and cheerful. He helps his mom by putting away items like toys and dishes. He likes playing ball and with toy cars in the company of other kids his age. He has a dog he is fond of. Joao is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. He is still too young to attend school. The family is needy and through your support Joao and his family will have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation, education and nutrition.
