Emeldah is a cheerful young girl. She stays with her brother, mother and father in Rufunsa district. Her parents are subsistence farmers who mainly grow maize as their staple food crop for consumption, however yields are always low because of infertile soil, unpredictable weather condition and poor cultivation methods. As a result, her father does some piece works in order to feed the family. Their annual income stands at $200, and this is not enough to meet their daily basic needs. For this reason, they have decided to enroll Emeldah for sponsorship. They are Nsenga by tribe but mainly speak Nyanja which is the most used language in the village. Emeldah is in pre-school. She’s fairly a healthy child.
