Maria is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her parents, Francisco and Dhara, in a municipality which belongs to the metropolitan region of Fortaleza, state of Ceara. Their simple home has brick walls, rough cement floors and a clay-tiled roof. It is self-built and has a tiny bathroom. Francisco is unemployed at this time. Dhara works as a school janitress and earns very low wages. Maria is cheerful, intelligent, communicative and affectionate. She is called Agatha in the household. She helps her mom by running small errands and filling the bottles with water. She loves playing school and with dolls in the company of other girls her age. She is fond of animals, especially dogs and cats. Maria is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. She attends kindergarten and loves painting and coloring.
