Julalak or Lak a miserable girl who was born into an abjectly needy family that lacks opportunities in many aspects. She lives with her father and mother who grow rice and corn for a living. The rice crops are kept for home consumption and corn for sale which is the main source of family income. Their farming is much dependent upon forces of nature; if it rained well, the crop yields would be sufficient for families to eat all year round but if facing up against natural disasters, landslides or drought, the yields might be damaged and not saleable. During an off-farm season, her father would do every job he could find in the village or anywhere he got hired. Despite of hardworking, the income is still lacking and this has thrown her family into an extreme hardship.
