Coura is a sociable but energetic young girl. Her father relies on seasonal farming. He usually grows millet and beans for food, and groundnuts for sale. But due to unpredictable weather conditions and poor cultivation methods, the farm produce is always low. In the dry season he works as tailor in the village to get extra. He finds it extremely difficult to feed his family with a low and irregular income of about US $1,200 in a year. Coura’s mother keeps the house in shift with the other women in the family. Coura and her junior brother and their parents accommodate in one room in the big family house. They have access to running water supply, but candles are their source of lighting. Coura is attending elementary school where she is regular and seems to enjoy learning. Reading is her favorite subject. She has said she wants to become a teacher when she gets older. For fun she enjoys sharing games with her peers. They love to play with dolls they make themselves out of rags. Coura’s parents’ dire wish for their beloved daughter is to have a caring sponsor who will change her day-to-day life.
