Jose is a young Brazilian boy who lives with his mother, Elysia, in a rural community located in the state of Ceara. Their simple home, which is rented, has brick walls, ceramic tile flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. The father has abandoned the home and has not been providing any type of financial support for his child. Elysia works as a day laborer in agriculture and the family receives a small family allowance from the federal government. Jose is calm, friendly and intelligent. He helps his mom by making the beds and putting the dishes away. His favorite pastimes include playing tag and hide-and-seek. He has a dog he is fond of. Jose is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. He attends a local public primary school and his favorite subject is Portuguese. His wish is to be a police officer when he grows up. The family is needy and through your support Jose and his family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
