Wenda is a girl who lives with her deserted mother and two sisters in a community located on the outskirts of the city of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique in southern Africa. The neighborhood where Wenda lives is a cramped slum where the main source of income is informal street trading. Her house, which is self-built, consists of concrete block walls, a zinc sheet roof, and a concrete floor, with running water and electricity services. The father abandoned the family without even looking back, leaving them in a desperate situation. The mother proves to be a brave woman, as she raises Wenda alone, without any help. She sells small objects on the street where she earns a small income to guarantee a daily bread. Despite the terrible circumstances, Wenda is a healthy and strong child and enjoys playing jump rope and dancing to local rhythms. She also helps her mother with chores around the house. Wenda is in elementary school and aspires to be a doctor in the future. Her mother has sought help from the ChildFund program, where Wenda will certainly receive support in the areas of health, education, nutrition and recreation.
