Yakuba is a kind, curious and happy boy who lives with his parents and two siblings in a rural community in the Northern part of Sierra Leone. They all live in a four bedroom mud bricks house with adobe dirty floor, unpaved walls roofed with old zinc with no toilet and electricity facilities. His parents are subsistence farmers who cultivate upland rice and other crops like okra and cassava. Their combined annual income is estimated at US$ 250 which is inadequate to meet the basic needs of Yakuba and family. Despite their difficult condition, he goes to school every morning and is very determined to learn. He is healthy and enjoys time with his peers while playing with their locally made toys stuffed with rags.
