Rute is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her parents, Carlos and Soraya, and with two brothers and one sister, in a slum area on the outskirts of a city located in the state of Ceara. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, rough cement flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. Carlos takes some odd jobs when available; his low income, however, is far from enough to meet basic needs. Rute is playful and affectionate. She helps her mom by putting away items like toys and dishes. She loves playing house and with dolls in the company of other girls her age. Rute is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. She attends a local public primary school and her favorite subject is Portuguese. Her big dream is to become a doctor someday. The family is needy and through your support Rute and her family will have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation, education and nutrition.
