Fernando is a young Brazilian boy who lives with his parents, Francisco and Maria Lucia, and with a sister, in a small community located in the state of Ceara. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, ceramic tile flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Water is carried from an artesian well. Francisco is unemployed at this time and takes some odd jobs when available; his low income, however, is far from enough to meet basic needs. Fernando is lively, playful and intelligent. He helps his mom by putting away items like toys and dishes. His favorite pastimes include playing soccer and tag. He is very fond of animals, especially horses. Fernando is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. He attends a local public elementary school and his favorite subject is math. His wish is to be a firefighter when he grows up. The family is needy and through your support Fernando and his family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation, education and nutrition.
