Islandia is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her parents, Francisco and Maria, and with one brother, in a small rural community located in the state of Ceara. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, rough cement flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. Francisco works as a day laborer in agriculture and the family receives a small family allowance from the federal government. Islandia is cheerful, communicative and affectionate. Her pet name is Ninha. She helps her mom mostly by sweeping the floor and washing the dishes. Her favorite pastimes include playing tag and hide-and-seek. She has a dog and a cat she is fond of. Islandia is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. She attends a local public primary school and her favorite subject is Portuguese. Her big dream is to become a veterinarian someday. The family is needy and through your support Islandia and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
