Shakuni is a little girl who loves to play ‘house’ and also loves to play with dolls with her sister. In addition, she enjoys watching cartoon programs on television. She is too young to attend school. The family lives in a remote village in the Moneragala district of Sri Lanka. Shakuni’s house is only partially constructed with bricks. The roof is covered with clay tiles and the floor is concreted. They obtain water from a neighbor’s well for their needs. They enjoy proper sanitary facilities and electricity. Shanuki’s father is the sole breadwinner of the family. He is a farmer of seasonal crops and his annual income is around USD270. Needless to say, Shakuni, her sister and parents live in poverty. If a kind-hearted person were to step forward to help this little child and her family, it would make a world of difference to their poor lives.
