Pietra is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her mother, Bruna; grandparents, Antonio and Claunilda, and aunt, Hortencia, in a small rural community located in the state of Ceara. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, ceramic tile flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. The father has abandoned the home and has not been providing any type of financial support for his child. Antonio works as a watchman and Hortencia takes some odd jobs as a kitchen assistant when available; the combined income, however, is hardly enough to meet basic needs. Pietra is active and cheerful. She helps her mom by putting away items like toys and dishes. She loves playing house and with dolls. Pietra is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. She attends a local public preschool and says that she will be a doctor when she grows up. The family is needy and through your support Pietra and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
