Rohit also fondly called as Apu hails from a very poor and needy family. His father is the only earning member of the family. He is a casual worker and earns a very low income of about 545 US dollar per annum which is far from sufficient to support the growing children. The mother tries to make the most of what is at hand, but there is abounding privation at home with no way out of their miserable plight.
