Saran is a smart and intelligent girl who lives with her parents and siblings in a deprived community in the northern part of Sierra Leone. They live in a two-bedroom mud bricks house with unpaved dirt floors. She sleeps with her sister on a locally made wooden bed. They access toilet facilities from the neighbouring house. Her father is a subsistence farmer and the mother sells assorted local foodstuffs in the local market. Their combined monthly income is about US$ 190.00 but inadequate to meet the basic needs of the family. Saran and her family lives about one kilometre away from school. They usually get their drinking water from a hand pump well which is about half kilometre away. Saran is attending school and does very well in science with the dream of becoming a nurse to help in the fight against infant mortality in her community. She is in good health and likes reading and dancing. With sponsorship, Saran will have a brighter future.
