Luna is a young Brazilian girl who lives with her widowed mother, Maria Luciene, in a rural community located in the Jequitinhonha Valley, northeastern Minas Gerais, which is a poor and drought-stricken region. Their simple home, which is self-owned, has brick walls, ceramic tile flooring and a clay-tiled roof. It has a tiny bathroom. Running water and electricity are available. Maria Luciene works hard as a domestic servant but her very low wages are far from enough to meet even the most basic needs of the family. Luna is cheerful, communicative and lively. She is also a studious girl. She loves playing soccer along with friends her age. She has a dog she is passionately fond of. Luna is considered to have good health, in spite of the poor living conditions and diet. She attends a local public primary school and her favorite subject is Portuguese. Her wish is to be a driver when she grows up. The family is needy and through your support Luna and her family have the opportunity to participate in important projects in the areas of health, recreation and education.
