Ethiopia is the oldest independent nation in Africa and the second-most populated.

Adequate food and water supplies are continually threatened by drought, contributing to malnutrition and disease in many children. And recent armed conflicts – like the Tigray War – have threatened many more children’s safety, education and dreams for the future. Since 1971, ChildFund Ethiopia has provided a variety of services to help children grow up ...

ChildFund Ethiopia’s health programs center around providing good nutrition, clean water and access to quality health care at each unique stage of a child’s life, connecting children to nutritional health screenings, malnutrition support and other medical treatments to help them grow up healthy and strong. Water points built by ChildFund throughout the country deliver clean, safe water to more than 12,000 people in hard-to-reach communities where this essential resource is scarce.

ChildFund Ethiopia has invested a total of 10,603,350 birr to support children’s nutrition and health in the Siraro area as the region struggles with an ongoing severe drought. To date, the emergency response program has supported more than 13,615 people through school lunch programs, family livelihood support and more.

ChildFund Ethiopia focuses on improving access to a quality preschool, primary and secondary education so that children can learn in safe, supportive environments – especially in areas that have been affected by conflict. We build and renovate classrooms, support schools with access to critical supplies, operate programs for children to learn about financial literacy, and provide support for adolescent girls to stay in school longer.

ChildFund Ethiopia offers extensive training programs to support equip youth with vocational skills that will help them earn an income for life, such as metal work, hairdressing, woodwork, photography, mobile phone maintenance, tailoring, embroidery and more. We also operate programs that help youth learn life skills, like leadership and public speaking, and become active citizens within their communities.

ChildFund Ethiopia’s child protection services support children who are at particular risk, like those in conflict-affected areas and those engaged in child labor. In the North Wollo and South Wollo zones of the Amhara region, for instance, where children have been directly affected by armed conflict, we established seven Child-Friendly Spaces to help children recover from traumatic experiences. Through these spaces, we reached more than 10,100 children with the chance to play, learn and access psychosocial care.
