In some parts of East Africa, there hasn’t been a drop of rain since October 2020, leaving local water sources completely dry and meals difficult to come by. Millions across Kenya and Ethiopia require urgent treatment for life-threatening malnutrition. Our partners in the area are even seeing children eat dirt and roots to stave off hunger pangs.
The drought is already historic in length and severity, and forecasts predict that it will worsen with time. Kids are missing school to search for water and food, and as resources become scarcer, children face an increasing risk of hunger and disease.
Ayane, after walking miles, collects muddy water from the only available source.
“My children often get sick due to waterborne diseases; our only water source is a muddy pond. They get diarrhea often. My two-year-old son gets sick often, he is always crying. I think it is because of food deficiency, they never have enough to eat.” - Ayane, mother of four, central Ethiopia
Our focus on Kenya and Ethiopia in the Horn of Africa
In Ethiopia: 4.4 million people need water assistance. Nearly 2.1 million livestock have died, while at least 22 million livestock are at risk and are very weak.
In Kenya: 1.5 million head of livestock have already died because of the drought, and this figure is expected to increase in the months ahead.
We’re working to help children and families survive this emergency, but we need your support.
