After days of torrential rain throughout Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil – a state about the size of Arizona – rivers have overflowed, submerging entire towns and cutting off electricity, water systems and communications. Children and families are scrambling to find shelter, food and clean water. Many have lost everything they own. In the chaos, children have been separated from their families, leaving them vulnerable to violence. In fact, we have had reports of children being abused in shelters, where they wait and sleep among adults who aren’t their family members.
